Why choose Ubuntu?
Ubuntu Server offers a large ecosystem of deployment examples and packages. For long-lived infrastructure, evaluate a supported LTS release and its maintenance coverage against your application’s dependencies.
Keep the system supported
Keep the package sources understandable. External repositories and install scripts extend the trust boundary; verify their owner, update behaviour and removal procedure before adding them.
A good workload fit
Application servers, containers, automation workers and development environments often benefit from Ubuntu’s broad documentation and vendor support.
Secure the first login
Verify the SSH host key through a trusted channel where available. Add your own public key, use a unique administrative account and limit inbound ports to the services you actually run. Keep a tested path back in before changing firewall or authentication settings.
Release and bundle are separate choices
Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and 22.04 LTS appear in the initial image menu. For specialist deployments, compare minimal, Docker and WireGuard configurations. Choose a supported release that matches the application, then decide whether a bundled tool is useful.
Review vendor instructions for the chosen release
An installer or repository written for one release may not be suitable for another. Check the package source and upgrade path. A ready-made Docker image still needs a firewall review and a backup of persistent application data.
Extended image variants
These specialist variants differ from the six Linux choices in the configurator. Confirm the requested image is available, uses a supported release and has compatible drivers and a documented update path.
