The KoalaVPS field notes

A password vault deserves a careful host.

An unofficial compatible server can be compact, but account security, encrypted data and recovery are critical.

Understand the project and clients

Vaultwarden is a separate project, so check current client compatibility, supported deployment guidance and security updates. A small resource footprint should not lead to a casual maintenance process.

Restrict entry points

Use HTTPS, strong account protection and deliberate signup controls. Protect or disable administrative endpoints as supported. Keep the host and reverse proxy current and restrict who can access private configuration.

Keep recovery independent

Store recovery codes and backup access privately outside the server. Do not make the only route to your backup depend on credentials stored only inside the vault. Consider how you would regain access after both server loss and device loss.

Back up consistent state

Follow the supported procedure for the database, attachments, configuration and keys. Encrypt offsite backups and test restoration carefully. A copied container image does not contain all persistent vault data.

Test a complete account recovery scenario

Use a disposable test account to verify login, a second factor, vault export where appropriate and the recovery route. Keep emergency information outside the hosted vault. Avoid testing destructive recovery actions against the only copy of a real account.

Check exposure after every proxy change

Review the public routes, administrative interface, websocket or notification requirements for the installed version and the actual TLS origin. An application configuration that was private behind one proxy can become public after a network or container change.

Separate the vault service from the recovery system

Select a maintained Vaultwarden release and verify compatibility with the Bitwarden clients you intend to use. Prepare a stable HTTPS origin, persistent private data and an independent recovery route. Keep the only backup password and account-recovery material outside the hosted vault. A compact service can still hold the keys to many other accounts, so prioritise a tested update and recovery procedure over shaving a small amount from RAM allocation.

  • Choose deliberate registration and invitation rules.
  • Keep administrative access restricted independently of user vault access.
  • Review notification and reverse-proxy requirements for the installed release.

Close setup access after the first account test

Deploy using the project’s supported example, persist its data directory and set the public domain to the actual HTTPS origin. If using the admin interface, follow its token/hash guidance and restrict who can reach it; do not mistake a URL that is difficult to guess for authentication. After creating the intended owner, verify signup/invitation settings from a signed-out browser. Test a second factor and notification behaviour before adding real secrets.

Test every client with disposable vault data

Use a test login in the web vault, a desktop client and any mobile/browser extension you plan to support. Confirm sync after changing an item and confirm that a signed-out user cannot read it. Check the configured custom server URL and certificate if only one client fails. If notifications fail but manual sync works, inspect the current proxy/websocket requirements. Keep a documented export/recovery method and store emergency codes through a separate trusted route.

Restore the database and its companion files

Follow the supported database backup method; copying a live SQLite file carelessly can omit recent write-ahead-log state. Include required attachments, configuration and key material from the persistent data directory. Encrypt the recovery copy and test a disposable user restore in an isolated environment. Do not rely on the container image as a data backup. An update plan should confirm both client compatibility and a viable database recovery path before replacing the running release.
