# Mail is a service, not just an open port.

Host email when you are ready to maintain DNS, reputation, spam controls and recovery as well as the machine.

## Confirm the prerequisites

Check outbound SMTP, reverse DNS and the exact port policy before ordering. Confirm the actual port-25 policy and address reputation for your order; no clean-IP guarantee is given here.

## Choose capacity for the stack

The Warden tier is a starting point to evaluate for a small deployment. Antivirus, spam filtering, search and attachment volume can change the required memory and storage.

## Set the domain protections

Align the hostname and reverse record and configure SPF, DKIM and DMARC deliberately. Test TLS and the mail stack’s supported transport-security features. Keep a separate outage contact.

## Earn and monitor delivery

Follow wanted-mail practices and handle bounces and complaints. Recipients can filter a valid server, so no provider can guarantee inbox placement everywhere.

## Back up mail consistently

Protect mailbox data, configuration, signing keys and account information. Test a recovery and keep copies outside the machine. Mail often becomes part of other accounts’ recovery chain, which raises the cost of losing it.

## Choose resources for this workload

Estimate mailbox storage, antivirus memory, queue size and backup copies before choosing a tier. Compare a larger VPS or Scout Metal for substantial mail storage. Confirm outbound port 25 policy, reverse DNS control and address reputation before treating any plan as suitable for direct delivery.

## A mail service rollout

Use the maintained upstream instructions for the selected release. The sequence below identifies the decisions and pass conditions to record in your own runbook.

- Choose the mail hostname, domain and maintenance owner

- Confirm required ports, reverse DNS and external dependencies

- Install a supported mail stack with protected administrative access

- Set MX, SPF, DKIM and DMARC for the intended sending policy

- Test inbound delivery, authenticated submission, relay rejection and spam handling

- Back up mailboxes, databases, configuration and required keys; test a restore

## What to verify before relying on it

Delivery depends on recipient policy and reputation as well as DNS correctness. Confirm mail-port access, reverse DNS and address reputation separately; none implies guaranteed inbox placement. Keep a verified route for account notices if your own mail host is unavailable.

## A little more clarity.

Does this use case include a managed application installation?

No. It describes a workload for customer-administered infrastructure. Application setup, updates, moderation, licensing and recovery remain your responsibility unless a separate managed agreement says otherwise.
