## Set the identity carefully

Choose the public domain before launch and understand which identifiers are difficult to change later. Plan account recovery and transactional email. A reliable notification path matters for signup and moderation.

## Size the whole service

Web processes, background workers, PostgreSQL, Redis and media storage all contribute to resource use. Federation and remote media can grow beyond the local user count. Measure worker queues, database growth and storage.

## Keep administration and moderation active

Use supported releases, strong admin authentication and deliberate registration controls. Publish community rules and a contact process. Federation decisions need an accountable operator, not just a running container.

## Back up the durable state

Keep consistent database backups, local uploaded media, configuration and protected signing secrets. Follow upstream recovery instructions and test a restore. A static copy of the web container is not a complete instance backup.

## Validate the first user journey

Before inviting a community, test signup or invitation, email delivery, media upload, password recovery and a federated interaction. Background workers can fail while the homepage still responds, so monitor job queues and retries. Keep the configuration, database and local media recovery plan aligned.

## Give media a lifecycle

Remote media caching, local uploads and backups have different value and retention needs. Estimate growth and choose any external object storage deliberately. Review its data location, credentials and cost rather than assuming a storage integration is operationally free.

## Choose a durable identity and installation track

Set the instance’s public domain before users depend on their account addresses. Arrange SMTP, TLS, a supported operating system and sufficient storage for local uploads plus federated media. The current upstream installation guide provides a source-based path; container packaging must be checked against the project and release you actually select. Avoid presenting an old Compose example as the only maintainer-supported route. Plan community administration and a recovery contact alongside the software.

- Inventory the web process, streaming service, background workers, PostgreSQL and Redis.

- Use separate service credentials and keep databases off the public listener.

- Decide signup and moderation rules before inviting users.

## Bring up one tested instance before scaling

Use the setup procedure for the pinned release, configure the public origin and SMTP, initialise the database and create an operator account through the supported administration path. Put the service behind a correctly configured TLS proxy and start web, streaming and job processes. Keep persistent uploads separate from replaceable application files. Initially limit registration so a configuration problem can be corrected before many accounts and federated events depend on it.

## Follow an actual post through the service

Use test accounts to verify invitation/signup, email delivery, login, media upload, a local post and an authorised interaction with another instance. Inspect whether background jobs complete rather than only watching the web homepage. Check a notification and a password-reset message. Queue growth with a healthy homepage points toward workers or dependencies; a streaming-only failure points toward the streaming service or proxy. A remote follow can fail because of federation policy as well as transport.

- Record worker queue age, storage growth and failed deliveries.

- Keep moderation and operator accounts strongly protected.

- Treat object storage as another access, location and backup dependency if enabled.

## Preserve local media and signing material

A Mastodon recovery needs the database, configuration/secrets and locally uploaded media, not merely a downloaded application image. Remote cached media may have a different recovery policy; distinguish it from irreplaceable local uploads. Protect an off-host backup and restore to an isolated environment before declaring the process reliable. Read release-specific migration and rollback notes before upgrading; rolling a container back does not automatically reverse a database migration.
