## Why choose FreeBSD?

FreeBSD provides an integrated base operating system with its own administration model. Confirm that the virtual hardware, network drivers and application dependencies you need are supported by the selected image.

## Keep the system supported

Keep the base system and installed packages on supported versions. Document the distinction between base-system updates and package updates so a recovery does not depend on one person’s memory.

## A good workload fit

Network services, storage experiments and applications designed for the BSD environment can be strong candidates. Linux-specific containers and tooling need compatibility checks.

## Secure the first login

Verify the SSH host key through a trusted channel where available. Add your own public key, use a unique administrative account and limit inbound ports to the services you actually run. Keep a tested path back in before changing firewall or authentication settings.

## Base, ZFS and jails are different starting points

A plain supported release, a ZFS-root setup and a jails-oriented environment offer different initial layouts. ZFS snapshots and boot environments can help with system changes, while jails create an additional service boundary. None replaces an independent backup.

## Use supported versions at release time

Older tutorials can label a release current long after its support ends. Confirm a supported FreeBSD release, compatible virtual drivers and a working rescue path before deployment. An old release label in a tutorial is not a maintained default.

## Extended image variants

These specialist variants differ from the six Linux choices in the configurator. Confirm the requested image is available, uses a supported release and has compatible drivers and a documented update path.

- FreeBSD base release

- FreeBSD prior-release migration target

- FreeBSD + ZFS root

- FreeBSD + jails tooling

## Older version labels belong in a migration plan

If an existing runbook uses FreeBSD 14.0 or 13.3, verify the release’s current support status and upgrade it to a supported target before relying on it for a new service. Older ZFS-root and jails examples can explain a layout without establishing that their original release remains maintained.
